Before you begin

1. Prepare: Review breed suitability, the preservation partnership, puppy price and responsibilities, and current litters and breeding plans.

2. Apply and e-sign: Tell me about your household and goals, record your gender and color preferences, read the waitlist agreement, and sign electronically.

3. Complete the $200 deposit: Pay within the same form. Enrollment requires the signed application and deposit; no separate website deposit is needed.

Puppy price and responsibilities

Puppy investment: $3,500. Deposit: $200, credited toward that investment. Optional cropping is listed at an additional $1,500, with a minimum four-month aftercare commitment; additional training is $3,000/month after two months of age. Transportation is quoted separately. Confirm optional services and final fees before arrangements.

Preservation participation

JDV retains exclusive reproductive authority. Subject to health and welfare, JDV may seek up to two Qualifying Litters from a Female Preservation Candidate; a Male Preservation Candidate’s owner agrees to cooperate as reasonably necessary for JDV to obtain at least three. Each qualifying litter has at least four puppies born alive and remaining alive through eight weeks. Unsuccessful attempts and non-qualifying litters do not count; no attempt proceeds when medically unreasonable or contrary to welfare. JDV pays authorized breeding-specific expenses. Female AKC co-ownership serves breeding and registration control and gives JDV no general custody, veterinary, or household authority.

Owner commitments

For every Preservation Candidate, complete and submit hips, elbows, an echocardiogram, and an ophthalmologist eye examination to OFA no later than 30 months of age, pay for testing, and give JDV complete results. Provide responsible care and candid updates. Reproductive use requires JDV’s prior written authorization and a signed event-specific Breeding Addendum. Sterilization requires prior written approval except when a veterinarian determines it is immediately necessary to protect life or prevent substantial suffering and delay would be medically unreasonable; notify JDV promptly and provide the record. Showing and titles are encouraged, not required.

Matching

Your recorded gender selection is guaranteed; color, a specific puppy or litter, and a placement date are not. Harlequin males receive more requests than JDV can fulfill. Before accepting a specific puppy, you may defer for as long as you wish without forfeiting your deposit. If JDV has not offered a reasonably suitable puppy of your requested gender within one year after accepting your deposit, you may request a full deposit refund or remain enrolled. A suitable black-and-tan puppy of that gender fulfills the gender-availability commitment even if you choose to wait for harlequin. Deferral does not automatically pause or restart that year.
